Wychwood, Evil Pumpkin Beer
| October 29, 2012 | Posted by Alec Fowler under Ale |
Been a while since my last blog. It was so long ago in fact we were still cheering our athletes in the great summer games. Darkness has now descended on the nation and therefore time to hunt out the beers that will warm you up on those long, dark winter nights. Wychwood’s Evil Pumpkin Beer 4.2 % is the perfect… more
Greene King, London Glory
| August 16, 2012 | Posted by Alec Fowler under Ale |
To fit in with the recent Olympic fever, and to support Team GB through their final few days of glory, I thought it only right to cheer them on from the comfort of my arm-chair drinking a beer that has a very tenuous link to the great games. In fact it is a link I have created and not one… more
Ape Ale By Mail
| July 24, 2012 | Posted by Alec Fowler under Ale |
Saturday morning saw me open the door to a surprise package from the postman. Nothing had been ordered so I was very interested to get inside and see what had arrived. Much to my delight the parcel contained 2 bottles of ale from the team at the Blue Monkey Brewery based in Nottingham. Close friend James Lynch had unexpectedly popped them… more
St Austell, Proper Job
| June 18, 2012 | Posted by Alec Fowler under Ale |
Mr Blinkhorn kindly returned from his summer vacation to Cornwall with a selection of local ales from for me to sample. Included was the old favourite Doombar (see earlier post), however the pick of the bunch for me was St Austell’s Proper Job 5.5%. The St Austell Brewery Company Limited was founded in 1851 by Walter Hicks. Mr Hicks mortgaged… more
Boggart Brewery Rum Porter
| May 20, 2012 | Posted by Alec Fowler under Ale |
Well I did sample this ale nearly close to a month ago, so apologies to you avid readers for the delay. Boggart Breweries Rum Porter was sampled at what can only be described as a shoddy cocktail bar in Manchester, Room. If you like old man pubs and real ale in pint pots I suggest you strongly avoid. To be… more
Morrisons Hedgerow Porter
| April 19, 2012 | Posted by Alec Fowler under Ale |
Two blog posts in two days, back in the swing of things. Latest post relates to an interesting beer picked from our local Morrisons on Saturday just passed. On special offer at £1.50 a bottle the chance to sample a new porter was too good to pass up. Into the trolley it goes. The Hedgerow Porter is brewed by the… more
Shepherd Neame, 1698
| April 18, 2012 | Posted by Alec Fowler under Ale |
This is my first post for a while, that is not to say I have been neglecting beer, far from it, just neglecting the fact to write about it. Moving on. A couple of weeks ago friend and colleague Mr Bartlem very kindly dropped a bottle of Shepherd Neame’s 1698 on my desk stating “try this you’ll love it”. I… more
Marco Pierre White, The Governor

It was my birthday on the 21st February and this post relates to then, so yes this is rather late. Simon, Charlotte’s brother kindly bought 3 bottles of ale to sample for the occasion highlighting my 28th year on the planet. A couple I have had before and will discuss later, however the most unusual was a bottle of The… more
Thwaites Very Nutty Black
| February 20, 2012 | Posted by Alec Fowler under Ale |
Tyson, friend and colleague featured in previous post “From Across The Pond” kindly produced a bottle of Thwaites (visit earlier post “Where It All Began” for information on Thwaites Brewery) Very Nutty Black 3.9% when I returned to my desk from lunch one day last week. A trip to Quality Save had seen him pick up two bottles , one… more
A Trip To London
| January 26, 2012 | Posted by Alec Fowler under Ale |
With a Friday booked off work a trip to London was planned to see the family and take in some of the sites. Charlotte and I arranged to see my Grandparents on the Friday afternoon in one of our favourite London boozers, The Coal Hole, on The Strand. An excellent pub that has been there for years and years, I… more
Rudgate Brewery’s Ruby Mild
| January 6, 2012 | Posted by Alec Fowler under Ale |
It has been nearly 3 weeks since my last post, I know that my 4 readers are dying to hear what I have to say regarding the latest real ale I have tried, so let me begin. Unfortunately I was working on Friday 30th of December, however from every negative situation there comes a positive. Our MD kindly let us… more
Jennings Cocker Hoop
| December 19, 2011 | Posted by Alec Fowler under Ale |
Yesterday saw the final shop before the big Christmas feed, delighted to say that our local Morrisons had a 12 bottle selection box of real ale for £15 including a number of ‘fine’ ales from across the UK. As I thought it rude not too, the decision was made to sample one of these ‘fine’ ales. I opted for Jennings… more
From Across The Pond
| December 14, 2011 | Posted by Alec Fowler under Ale |
This latest post relates to my first dabble in the American ‘craft’ beer market. I am un-sure what makes a ‘craft’ beer exactly, it appears to equal a strong beer, with a strong taste coupled with a strange name and bright label. Further clarification is welcome. And please correct me if the following brewer or beer is not in line… more
Let The Festivities Begin
| November 29, 2011 | Posted by Alec Fowler under Ale |
Another week another post. We started the Yule Tide festivities early as my parents came up to stay from London. The days beer drinking began just after 1PM with lunch. The whole family was here for a feed so we decide to treat ourselves and wash it down with some ale. With lunch I opted for a bottle of Batemans festive… more
Down South
| November 20, 2011 | Posted by Alec Fowler under Ale |
This blog post has taken a long time to arrive, however better late than never I suppose. Anyway last weekend we found ourselves on the South Coast to visit a couple of very close friends. The Friday night consisted dodgy larger and cider therefore we will concentrate on the Saturday. With a big party planned for Gary’s birthday I decided to get… more
